What to Look for in a Laptop?

Laptops are increasingly replacing desktop PCs at work. A laptop offers a number of advantages, particularly portability. If you are planning to buy a laptop, you have to consider a number of factors that are not taken into account when buying a desktop PC. These factors can be summarized as follows:

  1. Processor
    Recommended: Intel’s Pentium M, AMD’s Turion 64, or Apple’s PowerPC G4
    Minimum: Intel Celeron or AMD Sempron
    Notes: Regardless of what kind of processor, get at least 1.73GHz of processing speed
  2. Memory
    Recommended: 1 GB (1024 MB) or more
    Minimum: 512 MB
  3. Video Memory
    Usually standard. Get something higher if you plan to use it for games.
  4. Hard Drive
    Recommended: 80 GB or more
    Minimum: 60 GB
  5. Optical drive
    Recommended: DVD/CD-RW combo
    Minimum: CD-RW
  6. Screen Size
    14- or 15-inch
  7. Weight
    4-7 pounds
  8. Battery
    Lithium-ion battery
  9. Networking
    Ethernet LAN and integrated wireless card
  10. Ports and Connections
    Recommended: 4 USB 2.0 ports, a VGA connector, digital-media card reader, a DVI port for connecting to digital LCD monitors
    Minimum: 2 USB 2.0 ports, a VGA connector
